@aaron If you're using a PC you might need to convert the videos to .avi first before being able to see the previews. See the last paragraph in the post for a link to an excellent conversion tool.

@theresa That sounds like an excellent assignment--good luck with the grant and please let me know how it turns out. The editing will, I suspect, be a beast for you. It might be interesting to see how the students handle the basic editing software that comes with the Flip. I suspect that they'll pick it up quite quickly.

I teach elementary special education and I am submitting a grant for Flip cameras to increase reading fluencies. The kids like performing, so we will use reader theatre scripts and have the kids perform one every 6 weeks and I will send home a copy of the performance to the parent. (Of course we have to get permission for the video taping)
Because of the limited time I have with the students, I will do the editing for the 1st year.

When I save videos from my flip to my PC some of them don't show up with previews. I can see the previews are saved on the Flip folder but the mp4s only show as the app. icon without the preview. It's very frustrating to try and go through 30 videos trying to find one that I want without having the preview attach itself. Does anyone know how to fix this??

Linda,

Thanks for your note and sorry for the delayed response. One recommendation I have is that if students will be working on the files at home and at school, ensure that they understand how WMM (and iMovie for that matter) handles project files. See Creating an Effective Folder Structure for Movies for how to set up the folders to allow for easy transfer of files to Flash drives and the computer.

Margate and Linda,

Also, if you are using the Flip HD be aware that the files are mp4 and *not* compatible with WMM (the discussion above was for the non-HD Flips). Zamzar, as Linda suggests, is not the best thing for converting many videos. I ran into the same issue when my wife was trying to make a video from Flip HD files on WMM. We found and have used the Pazera Free MP4 to AVI Converter. It converted 200+ videos in one shot with no problems at all.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Bill, Thanks for this post - the details were especially helpful. I helped 3 teachers this year use Flip Cameras in a school that has only PCs. Like Margaret, we had some issues with the flip software. We wanted to use Movie Maker for the reasons you explained, but WMM wouldn't import the mp4 format and we had to convert each video clip first using Zamzar. Problem was, the resulting clips were many times larger than the MP4s and we had a storage problem. Did you deal with these issues as well?

Hi Bill, I teach communications classes to middle school and high school students with learning disabilities. We use the Flip for the same reasons you do. It's light, portable, durable and above all EASY to use. We record a daily show for the school-- some of which I've posted to YouTube so that the kids can show their families and friends. Up until now we've used the editing software that comes with the Flip simply because it is quick and easy. However, I am frustrated with the lack of features in FlipShare and the fact that video and pictures from other sources are incredibly hard to import (if not impossible). I am going to give Windows Movie Maker a shot based on your recommendation and see if my students can successfully use the program without too much help from me. Since I will have many of the same students next year, I am hoping to launch several independent projects with them in the fall and build on our successes. If you have any additional suggestions or recommendations, I would love to hear them.

Ah, thanks for that Bill - and no worries about a 'delay' - you were prompt by my first-week-of-classes clock! ;-)

Of course, a separate Gmail account - that makes total sense. I'm afraid I was still stuck in the "need an invitation" era of Gmail, so that hadn't even occurred to me.

Will Tweet about the class once things progress a bit. Thanks again!

Jessie,

Thanks so much for your comments. I'm glad you found the post useful. Thanks, also, for alerting me to Google and YouTube linking the accounts. What a pain in the neck. I'm sure it makes sense for Google, but what a pain for users. I'm sorry for taking so long to post a response. It has been hectic around here, to say the least.

I think I was able to find a (rather clunky) workaround.

1. I logged off of my gmail account.

2. I created an email address just for my class section: wrts09 [at] gmail [dot] com.

3. I went over to YouTube and created an account with the name: wrts09.

4. In the next screen, I used the right side and entered my new course-specific email address in the form field.

5. After clicking create account (or whathaveyou) I got a screen with this info:

Your Account Details
YouTube username: wrts09
Google Account email address: wrts09 [at] gmail [dot] com

So . . . it seems that it should be separated from my personal email account.

Let me know if you find another way--and keep me informed about how your class is doing. Can you Tweet a link to their assignment?

Bill ~ This is such a great resource! Thanks for posting it. One quick, logistical question: how did you set up the YouTube Channel in such a way that didn't violate your own privacy?

Let me explain. I've got a YouTube Channel set up for my visual media class (meeting tonight) for them to load short vid's from their Flips, but it is linked to my Google account. Even when I tried using another email address, it's linked to my Google info. So, for them to post anything to the YouTube channel, I'd have to give them info on how to access all my Google stuff....not good.

I'm sure there's an obvious work-around that I'm missing.
