My Overview of 48 Hour Phone Diary

Addictions come in all different forms. Addictions can include alcohol, drugs, food and other forms. I believe that as a society, many people have a phone addictions, not necessarily bad. Now our phone addictions are deathly in the direct form, it is just something that we should be aware of. Being a participant of this 48 hour phone experience was enlightening. Writing every time I used my phone was tedious, but also gave me a point of view, I would not have seen if I didn’t participate in this experiment. I didn’t understand how often I used my phone and how dependent I was for my phone. I have never given a second thought to my phone use until recording in my phone diary. It is incredible how physically writing down everything seem so much more effort than just typing something down on my notes application. We have become a lazy nation that needs everything now, not in a few seconds or minutes. The use of writing has been around since the beginning of time, the communication technology of phones are the new way of communicating. The ability to write a letter is so undervalued these days, but it seems to be a hard task for many now.

While participating in this experiment, I felt the need to use my phone less. I was not thrilled to have to jot down every time I used my phone. I was also grateful for seeing how I used my phone and all the benefits I gain from using it. I like being in contact with friends across the world. When recording everything, I didn’t notice that some of my phone use is so pointless like, texting with someone that is right next to me, or liking an image just to like it. When recording, I never thought of the interruptions and the time toll it takes from me. Doing this project gave me perspective on how my relationship with my phone can control my daily life and how I will drop almost anything to respond to my phone. Not only because I had to write everything down, but because I didn’t want to seem as attach to my phone as I really am. My phone is my alarm clock to wake up, it is there so I can call or text a friend when I am sad and it is there to record my life through notes, videos and pictures. My phone use included 45 usages during the 48 hour period. I texted a lot, called many friends, and spent some time on social media platforms like twitter and Facebook. My phones have become an essential part of my life and it is for many people across the entire worldwide.  My phone also advances me in my own technological abilities. When looking on social media platforms, I see new applications being advertised, I get new updates on my phone.

Technology is also my future. My career depends on my ability to use technology. In a marketing career, being able to spread information and advertising to the entire world within seconds is important. I have to be updated with new social media platforms, and know what is being posted every day. I have had some experience with posting on behalf of a company. I have tweeted, and found Facebook posts to promote Performance Food Group. Being able to reach out to a large group of followers, there is also a sense of duty to keep up with the posting. Learning this has helped me understand why I should post on Twitter when it is linked on my website. Everything technological is fast paste. Our use of our phones is fast paste. Since everything is changing, it is important to be technological literate because when newer technology comes, we need to be prepared to be able to understand it at a quick paste.
